I was quite excited to see that we were doing Ecclesiastes because I have never actually read through this book! I have a little chart I keep in my Bible where I mark off every chapter I read of the Bible. Ecclesiastes has been very obviously bare of x’s for a long time!
I have company staying with me right now and the baby boy kicking away on my lap so this will have to be short and sweet. I think it would have been short and sweet anyway because I didn’t do an incredible amount of gleaning from these chapters. I’m really hoping that by the end of Ecclesiastes, when I’ve read the whole story, I’ll have a much more interesting review.
I didn’t know a whole lot about the story behind this book of the Bible so I may have cheated a bit and asked my hubby for his assistance. Solomon wrote this book when he was not in close communion with God and had completely lost his purpose on this earth. Several times he uses the phrase, ‘under the sun’. It was clear in these chapters that he was not seeing things from a heavenly perspective, but rather only from earth’s perspective through man’s reasoning.
If we only try to figure things out with our own reasoning and logic, rather than trusting God and His Word, we will end up like Solomon with an ‘Eeyore’ perspective on life. Without Christ, all really is vanity of vanities.
I’m really hoping for more to glean by the end. I’m so glad we’re reading it because I haven’t ever read through it either.
Enjoy your company. Give me a call when all is quiet again.
I like what you said about Soloman’s view of life when he is not close to God. Now it makes more sense.
